V is the first double album from Unknown Mortal Orchestra, created between Palm Springs, California and Hilo, Hawaii. Designed to play as one continuous movement and road‑tested on long California freeway drives, it’s described as the definitive UMO car record.

Across fourteen sun‑bleached songs, Ruban Nielson draws from West Coast AOR, yacht rock, weirdo pop and Hawaiian Hapa‑haole music. The album evokes blue skies, hotel pools, and the alluring darkness beneath pristine surfaces  — a duality expressed through tracks like “Layla” and “Nadja”.

During the pandemic, Ruban reunited with his brother Kody in Hawaii, working with their father Chris Nielson (sax/flute) and longtime member Jake Portrait to bring the album’s vision together . Hawaiian musical traditions — especially Hapa‑haole — deeply inform the record, culminating in the atmospheric penultimate track “I Killed Captain Cook”.

V is a warm, reflective, sun‑drenched double LP that bridges nostalgia, family history, and UMO’s signature psychedelic soul.
