Hold That Tiger captures Sonic Youth in October 1987, just months after releasing their landmark album Sister. Recorded live at Chicago’s Cabaret Metro, the set is introduced by Steve Albini — banned from the venue at the time — adding to the bootleg‑era mythology surrounding this release.
Originally issued as a semi‑official bootleg on Byron Coley’s provocateur label Goofin’, the album has earned a sterling reputation among Sonic Youth fans for its raw, feral energy. Many listeners even prefer these live versions to their studio counterparts, with the band delivering a performance that’s spiky, pummeling, confident, and cathartic — a snapshot of Sonic Youth at the peak of their powers.
The recording showcases the band’s evolving dual language of punk‑noir dissonance and psychedelic sonic calligraphy, with Kim Gordon’s bass and Steve Shelley’s tom‑heavy percussion anchoring the chaos while Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo unleash ferocious noise‑guitar interplay.
The encore — four Ramones covers — lands like “the perfect pudding after a hearty meal,” sending the crowd home buzzing and ears ringing.
This first‑time reissue includes a gatefold jacket, mastered by Bob Weston from the original tapes, with audio repair/editing by Aaron Mullan.
