Originally released in 1970, Funkadelic’s self‑titled debut is one of the most radical, genre‑shattering albums in modern music — a wild collision of psychedelic rock, gospel, blues, and soul that completely rewrote the rules of Black music. The Rocket B2B description highlights how the album rejected Motown polish in favour of distortion, improvisation, and spiritual ambiguity, creating something gritty, chaotic and utterly groundbreaking.
Backed by a ferocious young lineup — Eddie Hazel, Billy Bass Nelson, Tawl Ross, Tiki Fulwood, and Mickey Atkins — the band delivered a sound that was raw, heavy and unpredictable, pulsing with both menace and joy . Tracks like “I Got a Thing” and “What Is Soul” are described as explosive, wrapped in surreal spoken‑word passages that feel like street philosophy crossed with cosmic gospel.
This 45 RPM deluxe 2LP edition is part of ORG Music’s Westbound Records reissue series, restoring the album with the highest fidelity to date. It was mastered directly from tape at 45RPM by Dave Gardner, with the original master tapes archived and restored at 54 Sound Studios by Gardner and Catherine Vericolli, assisted by engineer Nick King.
A landmark of psychedelic funk, this edition presents Funkadelic with the clarity, depth and raw power it has always deserved.
